One of the original blockbuster films of Nepali cinema, Kusume Rumal was the highest grossing Nepali film of its time and it maintained that record for more than 15 years before it was displaced by Darpan Chaya in 2001. Directed by Tulsi Ghimire, this romantic classic is a love story starring Bhuwan KC, Tripti Nadakar and Udit Narayan Jha. The plot, the music and the overall end product make this movie a must watch. Cuddle up with your SO while watching this timeless romance.
Saino is another Nepali hit movie from the 80s. This movie, starring Bhuwan KC, Tripti Nadakar and Danny Denzongpa is in intense look into family and human relationships. This family drama, which helped define the genre, also helped boost the careers of all three leads in the movie. The movie was directed by Ugyen Chopel with screenplay by Danny Denzongpa. Trust us when we say that you do not want to miss this family drama.
Another movie directed by Tulsi Ghimire, the movie Lahure stars Tripti Nadakar and Shrawan Ghimire. The plot of the film revolves around Gorkha soldiers and the sacrifices they and their families have to make. Straight from the golden age of Nepali cinema, Lahure is gives voice to the brave Lahures of Nepal and provides a realistic portrayal (for the time) of their lives. It remains one of the best dramas ever produced by the Nepali movies industry.
If you have a fondness for tragedies, you will find no better Nepali movie than Prem Pinda. Adapted from popular playwright Bal Krishna Sama’s play of the same name, this movie features a tragic love that blooms within the Rana Palace. It has everything you could want in a romantic tragedy – an innocent village girl, her true love and a lusty villain with his eyes on the heroine. While the movie does take some artistic license, it is still one of the best movies in Nepali movie history.
Yet another movie by Tulsi Ghimire, Balidaan features an impressive cast consisting of Nir Shah and the very popular MaHa Jodi. This successful movie with a unique plot line is another must film to add to your must watch list.
‘Maitighar’ film was released on 1966 which was first movie under private banner and third Nepali movie produced ever. Both the movie itself and theme song ‘Yo Ho Mero Pran Bhanda Pyaro Maitighar’ were evergreen hits.
A film based on triangle love story was a hit during the start of 21st century. Darpan Chaya is the highest grossing movie of all time totaling Nrs. 70 million. Viewers who had watched during its release on 2001 will always remember the name while the song of ‘Lahana le Jurayo Ki’ from the film will remain a track for dancing number on stages.
Chino – a 1991 movie is considered to be the most successful movie in the history of Nepali cinema. Almost all songs from this movie were hits among which ‘Mohani Laagla Hai’ sung by Narayan Gopal and Asha Bhosle was the most popular one.
|Yug Dekhi Yug Samma
‘Yug Dekhi Yug Samma’ was the first movie that indroduced Nepali superstar Rajesh Hamal. Over all, the film was a big hit in 1994.
Thuldai, a 1999 movie starred by Shiv Shrestha, Niruta Singh, Jal Shah and Sunil Thapa, Thuldai, was liked and appreciated by the viewers. It should be in must watch list if you are looking for an old movie taste.
